Fibre Fragmentation from Textiles
With Elliot Bland, The Microfiber Consortium
Hall A3, EOG Stage
As our understanding of the environmental impact of fibre fragmentation grows, organizations want to know what they can do to make product change to mitigate fibre fragmentation. To achieve this, we must first understand how the design of a textile affects fibre fragmentation.
The Microfibre Data Portal now holds over 800 tested fabrics with microfibre loss data alongside detailed fabric specifications. Our analysis of this data has enabled us to identify the key drivers of fibre fragmentation and thus, research priorities for the future.
This session will look to provide a broad understanding of the issue, share some insights from our recent analysis of The Microfibre Data Portal and identify ways you can work with your suppliers today, to create product change.

Durability of Waterproof Jackets
With Judith Waller, Mid Sweden University
Hall A3, EOG Stage
There is currently no method to measure product durability, although it is key to a more sustainable industry. In spring 2023, we initiated a global project with the aim to create a common industry standard measurement for product durability, accounting for product function and performance. To understand what durability means in the case of WWB jackets, we will present an insight into why products “fail“ from a physical perspective, based on the inspection of hundreds of well-worn and end-of-life jackets, and how we can use this information to develop a testing protocol to measure the durability of jackets that reflects real usage.

LCA – Lovely Creative Adventures?
With Bowie Miles, Textiles consultant
Hall A3, EOG Stage
We know that LCA’s require a large amount of data entry – then some magic happens and then we get a number out at the end. However, let me ask you; Do we really understand what that number represents? What does it mean to us – as a business or on a personal level? And how will it really change what we do?
Bowie would like to share with you her journey of LCA and her dream – to demystify LCA and encourage widespread understanding and adoption for ‘normal’ people. Using food and dietary analogies (easier to digest!), she will take the time to explain why LCA’s are important for the future within textiles and how LCA could, and should be used within businesses. Let’s shift the mindset of Long Complicated Algorithms to be Lovely Creative Adventures!
15:00 – 15:45
Breaking Business Barriers to Net Zero Emissions
Hall A3, Green Stage (A3.526)
Businesses around the world are rising to the challenge of setting Net Zero targets. However, the transformation required to meet these targets is not yet part of business-as-usual. To deliver a clear Net Zero transition, businesses must set out how they will change assets, operations and ultimately, entire business models towards Net Zero-aligned emissions reductions. It requires businesses to demonstrate high levels of ambition, action and accountability. To understand how businesses can achieve this, it is vital to know more about the complex challenges sustainability decision-makers face, both internal and external. The Carbon Trust surveyed over 400 senior sustainability decision-makers in large businesses on the biggest barriers to their Net Zero transition. This presentation will use the findings to present solutions, incorporating our expertise and client work, to help businesses in the outdoor sector break the barriers and maximise the opportunities a Net Zero transition presents.
15:00 – 16:00
Future of Sustainability Data
With Katy Stevens (EOG), Debbie Read (Equip Outdoor), Melanie Grünwald (Yonderland)
Hall A3, EOG Stage
Sustainability is rapidly becoming a data driven discipline due to increasing demands from regulation, reporting and to assess sustainability performance as well as communicate this transparently to empower consumers to make informed choices. Currently data is being generated and transferred in many different ways which is becoming increasingly chaotic. To reduce complexity, a harmonized approach would be beneficial and the industry has developed and tested approaches to generate and communicate this data. In this session, we will discuss what sustainability data is, why it is needed, and discuss what best practice looks like in the outdoor industry.
16:00 – 16:45
