June 10, 2026 Focus Topic & Trend Forum: Bio-based moves from fiber to function
Under the new Focus Topic “Bio-Based Materials – From Fiber to Fabric / Part 1: Focus on Fibers,” Performance Days turns its attention to the origins of tomorrow’s performance materials. The latest Trend Forum selections show that this development is already moving well beyond the raw material itself.
One of the clearest directions emerging from the jury meeting is that bio-based innovation is evolving from individual fibers and yarns into increasingly sophisticated functional materials and complete systems. Bio-based polyester and polyamide are appearing in applications ranging from lightweight stretch fabrics and shirting to fleece and insulation, while one of the highlighted innovations combines bio-based polyester with a bio-based membrane.
At the same time, construction itself is becoming an important performance tool. Three-dimensional softshell structures address fiber shedding without relying on conventional brushed fleece, while meshes, spacers and textured constructions create air space, comfort and functionality through fabric architecture.
Performance turns more human-centered
Performance is also becoming more human-centered. In baselayers, the conversation is expanding from moisture management and thermoregulation toward skin comfort, health and wellbeing. Shirting combines structure and stretch with bio-based materials, UV protection and cooling technologies.
Circularity, meanwhile, is becoming more sophisticated. The question is shifting from simply “How much recycled content does this fabric contain?” towards sortability, fiber shedding, material compatibility and what actually happens at the end of a product’s useful life.
From fiber to function: what’s next for the Focus Topic
Together, these developments point toward a broader definition of performance, one in which functionality, responsibility, longevity and material innovation are increasingly considered as one system rather than separate goals.
The October Focus Topic marks the first part of a two-season exploration. In March 2027, “Bio-Based Materials & Ingredients – From Fabric to Function” will continue the journey from material origin toward functionality.
