Outdoor industry turns Black Friday into green conservation action

This Black Friday, EOCA and outdoor brands call on consumers to think twice before shopping. Rather than pushing excess consumption, these companies are turning profits into direct conservation support.

As the Christmas shopping season begins, a number of outdoor brands are asking consumers to consider their purchases wisely over the coming Black Friday weekend. Members of the European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA) have come together to bring something good out of the over-indulgence traditionally associated with this time of year, offering ways of raising money to help fund vital conservation projects instead.

Seven EOCA members are either already running events, starting this week and over the ‘Green Friday’ weekend or even carrying on throughout December.

Brand actions range from donations to repair services

Gear Tips will be donating a percentage of membership sales over the weekend and Terra Nova will donate 5% of online sales for the whole month of November.

Gregory Packs, Nikwax Europe and Osprey Europe Ltd are offering customers a discount on all or specific items on their website and will then be donating some or all profits from the weekend to the association.

Meanwhile, Deuter is donating a portion of online sales over the coming weekend to raise funds for a specific conservation project being managed through EOCA.

Finally, Equip Outdoor Technologies, owner of Rab and Lowe Alpine, is helping to prolong the life of outdoor gear while also supporting conservation by donating 25% of their European Service Centre sales from this Friday and for the whole month of December to EOCA.

Redefining consumerism during the holiday season

“We want to turn the manic consumerism of Black Friday into a force for good, where people can consider their purchases more responsibly and think about either prolonging the life of their outdoor gear, or choosing items which, when purchased are having a positive impact in protecting our precious wild places,” says Tanya Kenrick, General Manager of EOCA.
