Report predicts next-gen materials are poised to scale up – fast

A new report outlines how next-gen materials could account for 8% of the fibre market by 2030. With cost savings and supply chain resilience on the line, brands must act now to scale these materials.

Next-gen materials poised for rapid expansion

A new report by Fashion for Good and Boston Consulting Group – titled Scaling Next-Gen Materials in Fashion – forecasts that next-generation materials could account for 8% of the total fibre market by 2030—up from just 1% today. “Next-generation” refers to novel and innovative fibers and materials that offer improved environmental and/or social outcomes compared to conventional options. This shift, equivalent to 13 million tons, reflects growing regulatory pressures, climate-related supply chain disruptions, and shifting consumer expectations.

Despite this potential, demand may still outpace supply unless brands take decisive steps to scale next-gen materials. The report highlights that companies integrating these materials into their core strategies could see a 4% reduction in their cost of goods sold (COGS) over five years compared to inaction.

Overcoming barriers through demand, cost, and capital

Scaling next-generation materials faces financial, technical, and operational challenges. The report identifies three key levers that brands must activate:

  • Demand: Consistent demand signals help stabilise markets, while demand pooling and transition financing can reduce adoption hurdles.
  • Cost: Optimising supply chain processes and scaling production can unlock economies of scale.
  • Capital: Securing strategic financing at each phase of adoption is critical for sustained growth.

A strategic shift for long-term resilience

Examples of next-gen materials mentioned in the report include textile-to-textile recycled polyester, lab-grown cotton, biofabricated proteins, biosynthetics, and alternative feedstock-based MMCFs (man-made cellulosic fibers). The vision is for these materials to transition from “next generation” to “preferred existing” status as they scale.

The report therefore urges brands to integrate next-gen materials into core business strategies, aligning financial goals with sustainability initiatives to drive long-term value. Whether acting independently or collaborating with industry partners, brands that scale these materials today will be positioned as leaders in the evolving fashion landscape.
