Vaude halves its GHG emissions – 5 years ahead of schedule

Vaude says it has reached its 2030 climate target five years early, cutting its global greenhouse gas emissions by 51 percent since 2019. The outdoor brand’s latest climate balance shows how the reduction was achieved – and what comes next on the path to Net Zero by 2040.

On Earth Overshoot Day, Vaude reports that it has achieved its own climate goals ahead of schedule, at a time when climate targets are being weakened or postponed in many places due to economic challenges. Compared to its 2019 baseline, Vaude has reduced its global greenhouse gas emissions by 51 percent, reaching its science-based 2030 climate target five years early, according to the company’s 2025 climate balance. Vaude’s longer-term target is Net Zero by 2040.

In 2019, Vaude committed under the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to halve its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 – regardless of economic growth. The company’s latest climate balance now confirms that this target has already been achieved. Vaude reduced its global greenhouse gas emissions from approximately 27,500 to around 13,500 tonnes of CO₂e compared to 2019. While emissions have fallen by 51 percent since 2019, revenue has increased by 19 percent over the same period. Vaude has therefore further decoupled resource consumption from its economic development. The announcement coincides with Earth Overshoot Day, which marks the date when humanity has theoretically consumed all the natural resources that the Earth can regenerate within one year.

“Earth Overshoot Day reminds us of the scale of the challenge that still lies ahead. The current heatwaves and wildfires clearly demonstrate how urgently effective climate action is needed. That is precisely why we must not lose momentum. Our experience shows that consistent action can make a real difference. Together, we can change the course,” says Dr. Antje von Dewitz, CEO of Vaude.

Supply chain offers the greatest leverage

Vaude has achieved its greatest emission reductions within its supply chain. Working closely with its production partners around the world, the company has been driving the expansion of renewable energy and improvements in energy efficiency for many years. As a result, emissions from energy consumption in production have been reduced by 71 percent since 2019.

The transition to recycled and renewable materials has also made a significant contribution to reducing emissions. Around 45 percent of current Vaude products already consist of at least 85 percent recycled or bio-based materials. As a result, product-related emissions have been reduced by 31 percent compared to 2019. By 2030, at least 90 percent of all Vaude products are expected to meet this standard.

“Halving our emissions demonstrates that climate action and business success go hand in hand. With clear targets and global collaboration, we can achieve real change. At the same time, we know that the path to Net Zero remains challenging,” says Jan Lorch, Chief Sales, Logistics & Corporate Sustainability Officer at Vaude.

Further emission reductions at company headquarters

Vaude has also continued to reduce emissions at its headquarters in Tettnang. Emissions from the company vehicle fleet and heating have fallen by 81 percent compared to 2019. Today, 75 percent of the company’s passenger vehicle fleet is electric. All electricity used at the headquarters comes from renewable sources. In addition, heating energy consumption, business travel, and the use of packaging materials and paper have all been further reduced.

Net Zero by 2040 remains the goal

Vaude states that achieving its 2030 target ahead of schedule does not conclude its climate work. The company says it will continue working with its partners to transform its supply chains as it moves toward its Net Zero target for 2040.
