Outdoor distributor introduces “Impact Discount” for retailers

The outdoor distributor Elements introduces novel “impact discount” for its customers, with the goal of inspiring greater sustainability in the retail sector.

Elements, a prominent distributor of outdoor brands such as Patagonia, Klean Kanteen, and Care Plus, is committed to setting an inspiring example for corporate social responsibility within the distribution sector. The Antwerp-based family business recently received the B Corp certification and is now taking a significant step forward by introducing the “impact discount:” a discount that retail customers can receive starting in the S24 buying season based on their positive environmental efforts. With this, Elements aims to trigger a much-needed chain reaction within the industry.

A benefit for the retail industry and the environment

Research* reveals that only 42% of outdoor retailers mention their sustainability efforts on their websites. Elements believes this needs to change. The family business has prioritized positive impact in its business operations for years and encourages the sector to do more for the environment by offering ‘impact discounts’ to retail customers who can demonstrate their impact. The discount comes in two forms:

  • 1% discount: applicable to retailers who use renewable electricity throughout their organization or are certified climate-neutral by an accepted third party. The criteria for renewable energy emphasize the importance of regional production and consumption.
  • 2% discount: for retailers that are B Corp certified, members of 1% for the Planet, or can present a Science-Based Target initiative-approved goal for reduced CO2 emissions.

Philippe Declerq, spokesperson for Elements, explains:

“Both we and the outdoor brands we represent have a strong passion for the planet. It’s high time to embed that in our partnerships. We understand that not everyone can benefit from the impact discount immediately, either due to time constraints or budget limitations. However, we are committed to advising and guiding our retail partners on their journey towards a more sustainable future. The ultimate goal is to create a chain reaction in the industry and demonstrate that small businesses with limited resources can have a significant impact.”

Retail partner Bever enthusiastically welcomes the impact discount. Christian de Jong, Manager of Innovation & Sustainability, states:

“In the current retail environment, where sustainability is a growing priority for both consumers and companies, we strongly support initiatives like the impact discount. Elements has always had a strong focus on sustainability, and this new discount is an excellent way to encourage retailers to make choices that benefit our planet.”

Small business, big impact

Elements distinguishes itself not only through the impact discount but also in various other areas within the import and distribution sector. Since its establishment in 2010, the outdoor distributor has donated €200,000 to various local nonprofit organizations (e.g., Natuurpunt, Klimaatzaak, Zero Waste NL) as part of their membership in 1% for the Planet. Recently, the company received the B Corp certification, further underscoring their commitment to ethical business practices and sustainability. On this note, Yannick Meijers, Wholesale Channel Manager at Patagonia, says:

“We have been partnering with Elements since their inception. It’s a fantastic match; they are professionals who view their business as an opportunity to contribute to something greater. Their membership in 1% for the Planet and B Corp is a testament to that.”
