June 5, 2017 Eight New Geoparks
Arxan’s volcanic landforms in Mongolia, the basalt rock columns in Mexico’s Comarca Minera and the limestone moorlands of Las Loras in Spain are three of the eight new sites that received UNESCO Global Geopark status in May. The Geoparks are geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable tourism. With this year’s additions, the world network now numbers 127 UNESCO Global Geoparks in 35 countries.
