PrimaLoft passes 1,000 brand milestone

Discover the origins of one of the most successful outdoor ingredient brands, and what drives demand for its insulation technologies today.

PrimaLoft says it has surpassed 1,000 brand partners globally, marking a milestone for the insulation technology company. The Latham, New York–based materials developer supplies insulation used in products across the outdoor, sport, and lifestyle sectors. According to the company, the growth reflects continued demand for performance insulation designed for a wide range of conditions.

From military insulation to global outdoor brands

PrimaLoft insulation was originally developed for the U.S. Army in 1984 as a water-resistant synthetic microfiber alternative to down. Outdoor label L.L.Bean became the first brand to adopt the technology.

Today, PrimaLoft insulation is used by a wide sweep of global brands, including adidas Terrex, Black Diamond, On Running, and Patagonia.

The company operates as an ingredient brand, supplying insulation technologies that partner brands integrate into finished products. PrimaLoft says insights from brand ambassadors, athletes, explorers, and everyday outdoor users continue to help inform the development of its materials.

Product technologies and lower-emission manufacturing

Recent products contributing to the company’s growth include PrimaLoft Active Evolve, an insulation fabric designed to provide breathability, moisture management, and stretch for garments used across a range of activities. Another technology is PrimaLoft ThermoPlume+, a synthetic down alternative designed to replicate the loft, softness, and packability of natural down while maintaining lightweight warmth.

Responsibility is high on the agenda, whereby according to the company more than 70 percent of its product portfolio now consists of materials made with 100 percent recycled content. PrimaLoft has also expanded the use of its P.U.R.E. manufacturing technology, which the company says reduces carbon emissions during insulation production by 50 percent or more compared with conventional methods.

In January 2025, PrimaLoft transitioned its flagship Gold Insulation to P.U.R.E. manufacturing. Silver Insulation followed in February 2026, with Black Insulation scheduled to be next.
