The Future of Faux Fur has Arrived

With the launch of the first-ever bio-based faux fur, KOBA by ECOPEL, DuPont Biomaterials launches a new era of sustainable alternatives to fur.

Over the past several years, consumers have demanded more transparent and sustainable fashion – giving rise to an emergence of increasingly eco-friendly apparel choices from brands around the world. Bio-based solutions, such as the DuPont™ Sorona ® polymer, offer a much-needed balance of sustain ability with performance; derived in part from plant-based ingredients, fibers based on Sorona ® polymer soften environmental impact while offering performance benefits from softness and warmth to stretch and recovery.

As the dialogue around sustainable apparel continues to expand to ethical fashion and outdoor wear – particularly alongside a growing awareness around animal welfare – DuPont has recognized a market need for a new application: sustainable and high-performing faux fur.

The DuPont™ Sorona® brand team recently collaborated with ECOPEL to launch the next generation of luxurious alternatives to fur. The KOBA by ECOPEL collection, which ranges from classic mink styles to plush teddy-style fur, is one of the first commercially available faux furs leveraging bio-based ingredients. Using Sorona® polymer fibers, the faux fur features an array of performance attributes including warmth, design flexibility, durability and dyeability – enabling apparel from outdoor gear to high fashion to be comfortable, stylish and socially-conscious.

Natural allies

Performance and sustainability are at the heart of the Sorona® brand team’s partnerships, and this collaboration with ECOPEL is a natural next step to expand Sorona® fabric’s possibilities. The collection’s premium look and feel, as well as its versatility, has resulted in partnerships with esteemed, sustainability-minded brands including Stella McCartney – proving that KOBA by ECOPEL is not only an ethical and sustainable alternative to fur, but a desirable one as well.
