ZERO PLASTIC by 2023? Here’s how Icebreaker is going to do it

Icebreaker releases its latest Transparency Report, where it announces its goal to phase out plastic by 2023.

As a continuation of its purpose-led journey to offer consumers a natural alternative to synthetics and to disrupt the outdoor industry towards sustainable solutions, Icebreaker has set itself the goal to remove plastic from its materials – and soon. As of the time of the report, Icebreaker found that 87% of their total fiber composition was natural, and it will now try closing the remaining gap by replacing nylon and elastane with new, natural fiber alternatives with comparable performance qualities.

“We know our plastic-free goal is ambitious but we believe that setting a big intention is the way to make a big difference,” Icebreaker’s Carla Murphy, Vice President, Global Brand and Product, writes in the report.

Citing the enormous burden plastic pollution poses for marine ecosystems, whereby up to 85% of human-made materials found on shorelines worldwide is believed to be polyester, acrylic and nylon microfibers, Icebreaker wanted to lead the way in eliminating these fibers from their own products:

“We can’t reverse the damage humans have caused to our natural world,” writes Carla Murphy, who continues:

“But we can work as a collective to help reduce future harm. For the wellbeing of our species and the planet, we must be more resourceful, responsible and innovative. These ideas, actions and improvements will shape our future. It’s natural to ask questions. It’s human to be progressive.”
