Scandinavian Outdoor Award honors this “hygge” wool innovation

This year’s Scandinavian Outdoor Award celebrates advances in circular design and material responsibility. Among the jury was Suston’s own reporter Karin Lindh, who helped select Glerups’ wool slipper as the Sustainability category winner.

The 2025 Scandinavian Outdoor Award placed sustainability front and center, honoring products that demonstrate responsible material use and long-term performance. Danish brand Glerups received the Sustainability Award for its “Slip-on with Natural Rubber Sole,” a wool slipper praised for its comfort and commitment to circular design.

The award, organized by Scandinavian Outdoor Group since 2005, highlights standout gear from Nordic brands. Products are assessed by a jury of outdoor journalists, retailers, and bloggers, who test each entry in real conditions. Among the judges this year was Suston reporter Karin Lindh, contributing her editorial insight to the decision-making process.

Jury cites wool comfort and circular certification

The Glerups slipper stood out for its thermal performance and natural materials. Made from 100 percent wool and fitted with a flexible rubber sole, it kept testers’ feet dry and comfortable from morning to night. Its Cradle to Cradle certification further underscored its position in circular product development.

“The slippers from Glerups put a big smile in the faces of the jury members while wearing them every morning and evening in camp,” the jury statement noted.

“Thanks to the thick upper made from wool the Slip-on with Natural rubber sole feet never felt too warm in the sun or too cold after sunset. Socks that got moist while hiking dried quickly. The stable wool felt gives support and the rounded, flexible sole offers a good feeling for the ground. As a testament to the strong sustainability effort, the slipper is also Cradle to Cradle certified – putting it at the absolute forefront of footwear business.”

The first pair of slippers were made by Glerup’s founder as a declaration of love to her husband and in order to use the wool from her own Gotland sheep. The development of glerups with natural rubber sole started as a kind request from the surfer community in California. After a day on the water they wore glerups, but suggested a natural rubber sole in order the cope better with the sand and outdoor use.
